Sunken kitchen

The renovation and conversion of the monumental townhouse in The Hague city centre is characterised by the custom-made kitchen that has been half sunk into the kitchen and by the bathroom on the top floor wedged between two bedrooms and the corridor with stairs.

Using the existing lowering of the old kitchen, the new kitchen stands as a large block in the middle of the space on the border between low and high, where there used to be a wall with the closed kitchen behind it in the low part. On the side of the dining table, this gives the kitchen a special height with the advantage of an unobstructed view over the kitchen and the possibility to sit on the large stainless steel worktop. The steps on either side of the kitchen unit make the kitchen part of a playful route. The lowered ceiling above the kitchen has been removed and the old beams have been exposed there.
